Description

This classic French Onion Dip recipe features deeply caramelized onions blended with creamy sour cream and mayonnaise, enhanced with garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and fresh chives. Perfectly balanced and savory, it makes a delicious dip for chips or vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

Caramelized Onions

  • 4 cups finely chopped yellow onions, or sweet onions
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic

Dip Base

  • 2 cups sour cream
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chives

Instructions

  1. Melt the Butter: Set a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Melt the butter, then add olive oil, brown sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine all ingredients evenly.
  2. Caramelize the Onions: Immediately add in the chopped onions and stir to coat them in the butter and oil mixture. Sauté while frequently stirring until the onions begin to soften and lightly brown, about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the onions are evenly browned, about 10 minutes.
  3. Deglaze the Pan: Add 2 tablespoons of water to the pan, stir and scrape to deglaze the pan, then cook for 5 minutes. Add the remaining water, deglaze again by scraping the bottom of the pan, and cook until the onions have deepened in color, about 5 minutes.
  4. Sauté the Garlic: Add the minced garlic to the caramelized onions and stir frequently until fragrant and the onions turn a deep brown, about 4 to 5 minutes.
  5. Let it Cool: Transfer the caramelized onion mixture to a medium bowl and refrigerate until cool, about 10 minutes.
  6. Mix the Dip: To the cooled onions in the bowl, add sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, the remaining ¼ teaspoon salt, onion powder, and additional black pepper. Stir everything together until smooth. Adjust seasoning with extra salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve: Transfer the finished dip to a serving bowl and garnish with chopped fresh chives. Serve immediately with chips or fresh vegetables for dipping.

Notes

  • Store the dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days to maintain freshness.
  • If you do not have Worcestershire sauce, substitute with 1 teaspoon soy sauce and ½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar for a similar tangy flavor.
  • For a thicker dip, use full-fat sour cream and mayonnaise.
  • Use yellow onions for the best caramelization and sweetness; avoid red onions for this recipe.
  • Garnish with fresh chives just before serving to retain their bright flavor and color.
